The Yuman tribe is small compared to…
April 1850 CE
On average a Yuman village consists of around eighty to two hundred and fifty men and women spread out along the far western Gila and southern Colorado Rivers.
Following the Mexican Cession and the California Gold Rush, American settlers have headed west and many have crossed the southern portion of the Colorado River, through Yuman territory.
To exploit this opportunity, the Yumas have established a ferry near the confluence of the Gila and the Colorado Rivers to transport American settlers from Arizona to California.
In early 1850, Texian scalphunter John Joel Glanton and his gang of twelve men attacks the Yuma ferry and occupies the area.
They now rob and murder both Americans and natives as they travel along and across the river.
In response, a Yuman war party attacks and massacres Glanton's gang, killing nine; only four escape.
Those killed, including Glanton, are scalped and burned in a large bonfire.
