October 630 CE
The Eastern (or Northern) Turks occupying the region of present Inner Mongolia had provided asylum to the widow and grandson of the former Sui emperor, deposed by the Tang dynasty in 618, and have, for the past decade, harassed China’s northern frontier.
The vigorous Emperor Taizong of Tang, mindful of the danger of Turkish invasion, has dispatched emissaries to sow discontent among the tribes paying unwilling allegiance to the Turkish khagan Illig.
Taizong’s policy pays off when a revolt against Illig erupts in 628; the following year, the emperor had sendt an army northward in support of the rebellion.
Illig, taken prisoner in 630 during a battle, is brought to the T'ang capital, where Taizong treats him with kindness; Illig’s defeated Turkish soldiers also receive merciful treatment, many of them being incorporated into the Tang army.
