The autobiographical Confessions of Lady Nijo, written in 1306 by the imperial consort, continues the classical Japanese literary style.

At the age of fourteen, she had been given by her father to Gofukakusa, the Emperor of Japan, to become his consort.

Later, she was expelled from the Emperor's court and became a traveling Buddhist nun, journeying for twenty years in Japan.

Books 1-3 cover Nijo's time at court; Books 4 and 5 deal with her life and travels as a nun.

The first books show a naive, though outwardly sophisticated, adolescent and young woman.

The last books show a wiser woman reflecting on her life and responding to the "common" people she meets and the tales she hears. (The Confessions of Lady Nijo was not widely circulated after it was written and only a single manuscript has survived. It was discovered in 1940 by a scholar named Yamagishi Tohukei and was published in 1950. A complete annotated edition was published in 1966.)

King Albert had failed in his attempt to seize Holland and Zeeland, as vacant fiefs of the Empire, on the death of Count John I in 1299, but in 1306 he secures the crown of Bohemia for his son Rudolph on the death of King Wenceslaus III.

He also renews the claim made by his predecessor, Adolf, on Thuringia, and interferes in a quarrel over the succession to the Hungarian throne.

Theodore Svetoslav gains the services in 1306 of Constantinople’s rebellious Alan mercenaries, whom he settles in Bulgaria, and makes unsuccessful overtures to the mercenaries of the Catalan Company, who have also rebelled against their imperial employers.

The Mongols return to India again in 1306, crossing the Indus near Multan and moving towards the Himalayas when Ghazi Malik (who is now the governor of the Punjab) intercepts them.

About fifty thousand Mongols are made prisoners, including Kubak, their leader.

Alauddin Khilji puts them all to death and sells their wives and children as slaves.

The Il-Khanid Mongols have mounted invasions of the Delhi Sultanate in 1303, 1304 and 1306; the Sultanate’s forces have successfully rolled back each attempt, dealing the Mongols a decisive defeat in 1306.
