The English have failed to take advantage…
August 1665 CE
The English have failed to take advantage of their victory at Lowestoft.
They are never to manage an effective blockade of the Dutch coast and cannot prevent the VOC fleet from returning from the Indies.
A battle between the Dutch merchant and treasure fleet and an English flotilla of warships takes place in Vågen (meaning "the bay, voe" in Norwegian), the main port area of neutral Bergen, Norway.
The Norwegian commanders, due to a delay in orders, take the side of the Dutch, contrary to the secret intentions of the Danish king.
The battle ends with the defeat of the English fleet, which retreats, much damaged but without losing any ships.
The treasure fleet is relieved seventeen days later by the Dutch home fleet.
For the British, the escape of the Dutch Return Fleet from the Indies is an enormous blow: they can only finance the war by capturing it.
