The eruption, on June 26, of Mount Cotopaxi in Ecuador, one of the highest active volcanoes in the world, 1877, causes severe pyroclastic flows that descend all sides of the mountain, with lahars traveling more than one hundred kilometers into the Pacific Ocean and western Amazon basin draining the valley.
The flow wipes out surrounding villages in the valleys, killing one thousand.
