Denison University, today Ohio's second-oldest liberal arts…
December 1831 CE
John Pratt, the college's first president and a graduate of Brown University, inaugurates classes on December 13.
Situated on a two hundred-acre farm south of the village of Granville, it is the second Baptist college west of the Allegheny mountains after Georgetown College, which had been founded in 1829.
While rooted in theological education, the institution offers students the same literary and scientific instruction common to other colleges of the day.
The first term includes thirty-seven students, twenty-seven of whom hail d from Granville; nearly half of these students are under fifteen years of age.
The school is more of an academy than a college.
