Peter O'Connor sets the first International Association…
August 1901 CE
Peter O'Connor sets the first International Association of Athletics Federations recognized long jump world record, of 24 feet 11¾ inches, in Dublin on August 5, 1901.
It causes a sensation, being only a fraction short of the 25 ft (7.62m) barrier, and will remain unbeaten for twenty years, a longevity surpassed only by Jesse Owens's twenty-five-year record and Bob Beamon's twenty-three-year record and by the current record of Mike Powell.
It will remain an Irish record for a remarkable eighty-nine years.
