The foundation stone for a new neoclassical marble building to house the National Library of Greece in Athens is laid on March 16, 1888.
The building is financed by three Kefallonian-born brothers of the Diaspora, Panagis, Marinos and Andreas Vallianos.
It's designer is Baron Theophil von Hansen and its construction will be supervised by Ernst Ziller.
