The Gumal Pass, which connects Ghazni in eastern Afghanistan with Tank and Dera Isma il Khan in Pakistan via Domandi and Kot Murtaza, is the most important pass between the Khyber and Bolan passes.
The oldest trade route in the area, the pass is the traditional route of nomadic Afghan traders called Powindahs.
The British succeed in opening the pass in 1889 by treaty agreement with the Mahsud Waziri inhabitants, a Pashtun tribe.
