France initiates the colonization of the American Southwest.

René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, sent on a secret mission from New France to explore the Lower Mississippi, found a colony and eventually conquer Spanish silver mines, dies in the course of his ill-fated expedition.

La Salle had intended to found the colony at the mouth of the Mississippi River, but inaccurate maps and navigational errors had caused his ships to instead anchor four hundred miles (six hundred and fifty kilometers) west, off the coast of Texas near Matagorda Bay.

Although the colony survives only a few years before being utterly destroyed by the Karankawas, it establishes France's claim to possession of the region that is now Texas, and will later support the claim by the United States to the region as part of the Louisiana Purchase.

The Spanish Crown, fearing that another French attempt is inevitable, authorizes for the first time small outposts in eastern Texas and Pensacola.
