...the primary issue in dispute between Romania and Austria-Hungary has become the Hungarian government's policy of assimilating the Romanians of Transylvania.
To achieve this goal, Budapest has restricted the use of the Romanian language in education and public affairs and diminished the autonomy of the Orthodox and Uniate churches—the principal Romanian cultural bulwarks.
The Hungarians also reject Romanian demands for collective political rights as a nationality, while the Romanians resist integration into a Hungarian national state.
