Many Cubans turn to autonomismo (autonomy movement), with the first major attempt at independence having ended in partial disaster.
The movement, which advocates autonomous rule for Cuba under the Spanish monarchy, differs little from reformism.
Autonomismo has its origins in the first half of the century but had lost momentum during the periods of annexation and reformism.
Now, after the end of the Ten Years' War, it coalesces into the Autonomous Liberal Party (Partido Lib- eral Autonomista).
The founders of the party, former annexationists and reformists, call for a system of local self- government patterned on the British colonial model and request numerous economic and political reforms, but within the Spanish empire.
