The Kingdom of Loango, at its height…
1680 CE
The Kingdom of Loango, at its height earlier in the seventeenth century in the lower Congo basin, had stretched from Mayombe in the north to almost the mouth of the Congo River, but by 1672 has weakened considerably.
N'Gangue M'voumbe Niambi, the king of Loango in the latter half of the seventeenth century, has profited handsomely from Portuguese slave trade, which had recently begun.
Olfert Dapper, in his Description of Africa (1688), reports that Niambi possessed several firearms, although he didn't know how to use them.
