The Kingdom of Pagan, or Bagan, has become a truly cosmopolitan center of Buddhist studies, attracting monks and students from as far as India and Sri Lanka as well as the Thai and Khmer kingdoms.
Most of continental Southeast Asia had come under the control of either the Pagan Kingdom or the Khmer Empire by the mid-twelfth century, but the Pagan kingdom has gone into decline as more land and resources have fallen into the hands of the powerful sangha (monkhood) and as the Mongols threaten from the north.
