The Siamese conduct a series of military campaigns known as the Haw Wars in the region of present northern Laos, sending an army up the Nam Ou in 1873 to attack the Ho and drive them out.
Some Ho retreat into Houaphan, while others overrun the Plain of Jars, where Chao Hung has succeeded his brother Chao Pho as ruler of the Phuan state, which becomes the main theater of conflict.
The Ho camp at Chiang Kham and demand "tax" payments from the local population, threatening to kill anyone who resists.
hao Hung raises a small army and leads it to assist the beleaguered governor of Chiang Kham in 1874, but a fatal bullet wound to Chao Hung prompts the withdrawal of his army.
Chao Hung's son, Prince Khanti, appeals to Annam for aid.
A joint attack is made on Chiang Kham but is also repulsed.
