One of the expedition's horses had disappeared, and they believed the Sioux were responsible.

Afterward, the two sides had met and there had been a disagreement, and the Sioux had asked the men to stay or to give more gifts instead before being allowed to pass through their territory.

They had come close to fighting several times, and both sides had finally backed down and the expedition continues on to Arikara territory.

Clark writes they are "warlike" and are the "vilest miscreants of the savage race".
