Strengthened by this augmented force, Walker seizes Granada, center of conservative power.

The stunned conservative government surrenders, and the United States quickly recognizes a new puppet liberal government with Patricio Rivas as president.

Real power, however, remains with Walker, who has assumed command of the Nicaraguan army.
