The two ships of the Malaspina expedition sail from Acapulco directly to Yakutat Bay, Alaska (at this time known as Port Mulgrave), where the rumored Northwest Passage is said to exist.

Finding only an inlet, Malaspina carefully surveys the Alaskan coast west to Prince William Sound.
