The Mexican state of Zacatecas has revolted,…
May 1835 CE
The Mexican state of Zacatecas has revolted, under the Liberal banner, against Santa Anna.
The Zacatecan militia, led by Francisco Garcia, is the largest and best supplied of the Mexican states, and well armed with .753 caliber British 'Brown Bess' muskets and Baker .61 rifles, but after two hours of combat on May 12, 1835, Santa Anna's "Army of Operations" defeats the Zacatecan militia and takes almost three thousand prisoners.
Santa Anna allows his army to loot the capital city of Zacatecas for forty-eight hours.
After defeating Zacatecas, he plans to move on to Coahuila y Tejas to quell the rebellion there, which is being supported by settlers from the United States (aka Texians).
Santa Anna also loots the rich Zacatecan silver mines at Fresnillo, and as further punishment, he splits Zacatecas into a smaller state, separating an independent agricultural territory, Aguascalientes.
Santa Anna will increasingly employ this disturbing tendency against those he regards as traitors.
He now orders his brother-in law, General Martin Perfecto de Cos, to march into Texas and put an end to disturbances against the state.
