December 1828 CE
Efforts by the Porte to reform the administration of the empire are continual during the nineteenth century; similar efforts by local authorities on Cyprus fail, as do those of the Porte.
Various Cypriot movements arise in the 1820s and the 1830s and work to gain greater self-government, but because the imperial treasury takes most of the island's wealth and because local officials are often corrupt, reform efforts fail.
Cypriots have little recourse through the courts because Christian testimony is rarely accepted.
