A tortoise called Timothy is brought to…
1892 CE
A tortoise called Timothy is brought to the estate of Powderham Castle in Devon, England, where she will live until her death in 2004.
In spite of her name, Timothy is female; it is not properly known how to sex tortoises in the nineteenth century.
A Mediterranean spur-thighed tortoise believed to have been born in the Mediterranean shores of Turkey, she had been found aboard a Portuguese privateer in 1854, aged around ten, by Captain John Guy Courtenay-Everard of the Royal Navy.
The tortoise has served as a mascot on a series of navy vessels until 1892.
