The Greek population in Crete, demanding union…
1896 CE
The Greek population in Crete, demanding union with Greece, stages an insurrection in 1896.
The rebellion has been fomented in part by the secret Greek nationalistic society called Ethniki Etairia.
The Ottoman Turks, already in control of parts of Crete by 1669, had in that year wrested the capital city of Candia (now Iráklion) from the Venetians after one of the longest sieges in history.
Crete has stagnated under Turkish rule, and native uprisings have always been foiled, including those in 1821 and 1866.
Relations between the Christians and their Muslim rulers have steadily deteriorated.
