A revolt begins in Nicaragua in April…
1888 CE to 1899 CE
A revolt begins in Nicaragua in April 1893 when a coalition of liberals and dissident conservatives ousts Sacasa and installs another conservative in office.
An effort is made to share power with the liberals, but this coalition soon proves unworkable.
In July, Zelaya's liberal supporters resign from the government and launch another revolt, which soon proves successful.
A constitutional convention is hurriedly called, and a new constitution incorporating anticlerical provisions, limitations on foreigners' rights to claim diplomatic protection, and abolition of the death penalty is adopted.
Zelaya is confirmed as president, a post he will retain until 1909.
