The popularity of Vasili IV’s slain cousin …

Years: 1610 - 1610
July

The popularity of Vasili IV’s slain cousin and the Swedish mercenaries, whose loyalty he had purchased with the cession of Russian territory, have allowed him to remain on his unstable throne, but his rule has never been generally recognized.

Even in Moscow itself he has little or no authority, and he has only avoided deposition by the dominant boyars because they have no one to replace him with.

Soon after the battle of Klushino, Vasili is ousted by his former adherents, Princes Vorotynsky and Mstislavsky.
