Henry Clay unanimously wins the presidential nomination…
September
1844 CE
Henry Clay unanimously wins the presidential nomination at the 1844 Whig National Convention, but southern Democrats had successfully blocked Van Buren's nomination, and the 1844 Democratic National Convention instead chooses former Speaker of the House James K. Polk.
Unlike Van Buren and Clay, Polk supports the annexation of Texas and advocates a belligerent stand against Britain on the Oregon Question.
