Marie François Sadi Carnot, the fourth president of the Third Republic of France, is assassinated on June 24, 1894 by an anarchist.
Carnot is reaching the zenith of his popularity, when, after delivering a speech at a public banquet in Lyon in which he appears to imply that he will not seek re-election, he is stabbed by an Italian anarchist named Sante Geronimo Caserio.
Carnot will die shortly after midnight on June 25.
The stabbing arouses widespread horror and grief, and the president will be honored with an elaborate funeral ceremony in the Panthéon on July 1.
Caserio calls the assassination a political act, and will be executed on August 16, 1894.
