The U.S. Army, commanded by the elderly Lieutenant General Winfield Scott, veteran of the War of 1812 and the Mexican–American War, consists of ten regiments of infantry, four of artillery, two of cavalry, two of dragoons, and three of mounted infantry.

The regiments are scattered widely.

Of the one hundred and ninety-seven companies in the army, one hundred and seventy-nine occupy seventy-nine isolated posts in the West, and the remaining eighteen man garrisons east of the Mississippi River, mostly along the Canada–United States border and on the Atlantic coast.
