The Spaniards in the region of present Bolivia establish, by order of the Viceroy of Peru, Oropeza (present Cochabamba) on August 2, 1574 in a broad valley on the eastern slopes of the Andes at an altitude of eight thousand three hundred and ninety-two feet (two thousand five hundred and fifty-eight meters).
It is to be an agricultural production center to provide food for the mining towns of the relatively nearby Altiplano region, particularly the city of Potosí.
