June 1548 CE
The Spanish conquerors of the region of present Bolivia establish on the site of a former Inca village, Chuquiago, a way station along the caravan route from the silver mines at Potosí to Lima in 1548 They have selected the town's location, twelve thousand and one feet (three thousand six hundred and fifty-eight meters) above sea level in a canyon carved out of the Altiplano, as a means of escaping the Altiplano’s harsh climate, and name the town Nuestra Señora de La Paz to commemorate the peaceful conditions existing in Bolivia at this time.
(As the administrative capital of present-day Bolivia, La Paz remains the world’s highest such city.)
