Renewed Haitian invasions threaten the Dominican Republic's independence.

On March 19, 1844, the Haitian Army, under the personal command of President Hérard, invades the eastern province from the north and progresses as far as Santiago, but is soon forced to withdraw after suffering disproportionate losses.
