Created on March 18, 1852, Wells Fargo will gain control of Butterfield Overland Mail Company in 1860, leading to the operation of the western portion of the Pony Express.
Wells Fargo & Co. is reated to facilitate an express business between New York and San Francisco by way of the Isthmus of Panama and on the Pacific coast.
The new company offers banking services, which include buying gold and selling paper bank drafts, and express services, which includes rapid delivery of gold and anything else valuable.
The company opens for business in the gold rush city of San Francisco, and soon the Company's agents will open offices in the other new cities and mining camps in the West.
