Two events in the 1840s renew the…
1840 CE to 1851 CE
Coffee, which has come to occupy an important position in the island's economy, is seriously affected by a fall in prices that almost ruins coffee planters.
Capital and labor flee from coffee into sugar, and much land is shifted to the growing of cane.
The second event is the introduction of the railroad.
Cane can now be brought from remote areas to the mills and then to the ports for shipment.
What started out as a relatively small business has grown into a powerful, capitalistic enterprise based on large landholding, slave labor, and mass production.
