September 1674 CE
The Swedish Empire has experienced a financial crisis in the 1660s and early 1670s.
In hope of subsidies, Charles XI had entered the anti-French Triple Alliance with the Dutch Republic and the United Kingdom, which had broken apart when Charles II of England rapproached France in 1670, after the War of Devolution.
Sweden and France had concluded an alliance in April 1672, with France promising four hundred thousand riksdalers of subsidies in peace time, to be raised to six hundred thousand in war time, for Sweden maintaining a sixteen thousand-man strong army in her German dominions.
Also, Sweden maintains good relations to the Dukes of Holstein-Gottorp, south of Denmark.
Sweden has by September 1674 enlarged her army to twenty-two thousand men after France had increased the subsidies to nine hundred thousand riksdalers, which she threatens to withdraw if Sweden is not using this army, stationed in Swedish Pomerania, for an attack on her adversaries.
