Shahu, a grandson of Shivaji, is released…
1684 CE to 1827 CE
Following a brief struggle with his aunt Tarabai, Shahu becomes ruler.
During this period, he appoints Balaji Vishwanath Bhat and later his descendants as the Peshwas or the prime ministers of the Maratha Empire.
After the death of Aurangzeb, the Maratha Empire expands greatly under the rule of the Peshwas.
The empire at its peak stretches from Tamil Nadu in the south, to Peshawar (modern-day Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) in the north, and Bengal and Andaman Islands in east.
The rise of Maratha military power under Shivaji and his heirs in the immediate north of what is today considered South India have a profound influence on the political situation of South India, with Maratha control quickly extending as far east as Ganjam and as far south as Thanjavur.
