The earthquake triggered many landslides, the largest of which dams the Sai River (a tributary of the Shinano River.
Twenty-one thousand houses are damaged and thirty-four hundred burned, and an additional forty-four thousand homes are damaged by the landslides in the area.
Nineteen days later, the failure of this earthquake dam will cause a flood that will destroy many more houses and kill a further thirty-five people.
