The territory later to be known as the Banat had been conquered and annexed by the Kingdom of Hungary in 1030.
Timisoara (Hungarian: Temesvár) in the Banat region of present western Romania and today the second largest Romanian city, is first documented in 1212 (or 1266) as a Hungarian border fortress.
Timișoara had grown considerably during the reign of Charles I, who, upon his visit here in 1307, orders the construction of a royal palace.
