The Decline and Reconquest of Braga (8th–11th Century CE)
The transition from Visigothic rule to Muslim control in Iberia remains poorly documented, marking a period of decline and uncertainty for cities such as Braga. Captured by the Moors in the early 8th century, Braga—once a major Roman and Visigothic center—falls into centuries of Muslim occupation.
After more than three hundred years under Muslim rule, Christian forces under Ferdinand I of León and Castile successfully recapture Braga in 1040 CE, marking an important step in the Reconquista. This victory restores Christian dominance in the region, paving the way for Braga’s re-emergence as a religious and cultural center in the Iberian Peninsula.
