Chile, in expanding its territory northward by almost one-third as a result of the War of the Pacific, acquires valuable nitrate deposits, the exploitation of which will lead to an era of national affluence.
The Treaty of Ancon, concluded in October, 1883, ends hostilities between Chile and Peru, with Chile receiving Peru’s Tarapaca province and rights to continue occupying the Peruvian provinces of Tacna and Arica for ten years, with a plebiscite to be held then to determine future ownership.
