The Choctaw chief Pushmataha, based in Mississippi, makes his early reputation in battles against the Osage tribe in the area of southern Arkansas and their borderlands.

When he was thirteen, Pushmataha had fought in a war against the Creek people.

Some sources report that he was given the early warrior-name of "Eagle".

Better attested is his participation in wars with the Osage and Caddo tribes west of the Mississippi River between 1784 and 1789.
