Joseph Maria Olbrich is a member of Wagner's atelier in Vienna when he designs the group's Secession Building on the Karlsplatz, completed in 1898 in time for the second exhibition.

Its blocklike simplicity is relieved by the floral Art Nouveau decoration used on the metal cupola.
