The War of the Reunions, a part…
1684 CE
The War of the Reunions, a part of the long lasting attempts by Louis XIV to take portions of the Spanish Netherlands, is a direct sequel to the War of Devolution and the Franco-Dutch War.
The Duchy of Luxembourg had been able to remain aloof from the Thirty Years' War for a time, but in 1635, when France became involved, a period of disaster began for the duchy when it was wracked by war, famine, and epidemics.
Moreover, the war had not ended for Luxembourg with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, but only with the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659.
France under Louis XIV had begun in 1679 to conquer parts of the Habsburg-ruled duchy and in 1684 the conquest is completed with the capture of Luxembourg city, an action that causes alarm among France's neighbors.
