The west central Mexican city of Guadalajara,…
February 1542 CE
The west central Mexican city of Guadalajara, founded in 1531 in the Atemajac Valley, has been moved twice since its founding.
Following a large attack by natives on September 28, 1541, during the Mixtón War, it had been decided once more to relocate the city and reestablish it again in the Atemajac Valley.
Today's city of Guadalajara is founded at this site by conquistador Cristóbal de Oñate on February 14, 1542, by Royal decree of King Charles V. During the Colonial era, Guadalajara is to become the capital of Nueva Galicia and of the Intendencia of Guadalajara until the War of Independence.
As the capital city of the Mexican state of Jalisco, it is today the third largest metropolitan area of Mexico, just behind the Mexico City and Tijuana-San Diego metropolitan areas.
