SS Anglo Saxon, an iron screw steam ship belonging to the Montreal Ocean Steamship Company and commanded by Captain William Burgess, had sailed from Liverpool for Quebec on April 16th, 1863, with a total of four hundred and forty-five passengers and crew.

On April 27th, in dense fog, she runs aground four miles off Cape Race, Newfoundland.

The ship breaks up within an hour of hitting the rocks, and sinks.

Of those on board, two hundred and thirty-seven people die, making this one of Canada's worst shipwrecks.
