The WIC loses control of Recife on…
January 1654 CE
The WIC loses control of Recife on January 28, 1654, leaving the Portuguese their colony of Brazil and putting an end to Nieuw Holland.
The Portuguese will never regain their former monopoly over the Atlantic slave trade, however.
After Brazil comes again under Portuguese rule in 1654, the region’s Jews must now emigrate to the Dutch West Indies and New Netherland.
