September 1973 CE
The Israeli right-wing political party bloc, Likud, in full Likud-liberalim Leumi (Hebrew: "Unity-National Liberals") is founded in September 1973 to challenge the Labor Alignment (headed by the Israel Labor Party).
The major component of the Likud coalition is the Gahal bloc, which consists of the Herut ("Freedom") party and the Liberal Party.
The other partners in Likud are relatively small (though often influential because of the incremental weight that they add to the balance of power).
Sharon, who has been instrumental in the formation of Likud, becomes a member of the Knesset (Israeli parliament).
