However, the British had made it clear that they would not interfere on behalf of the king nor take any action unless British lives were threatened.
Achieving the evacuation of the British, however, involves two contentious issues—Sudan and the Suez Canal.
Sudan had proved to be the easier to resolve.
In February 1953, the Egyptian government had agreed to a plan for self-determination for Sudan to
be implemented over a three-year period.
The Sudanese had opted for independence rather than union with Egypt.
