Hennessy's murder is quickly followed by mass…
October 1890 CE
Mayor Joseph A. Shakspeare (according to the Picayune) tells the police to "scour the whole neighborhood. Arrest every Italian you come across."
Within twenty-four hours, forty-five people have been arrested.
By some accounts, as many as two hundred and fifty Italians are rounded up.
Most will eventually be released for lack of evidence.
Local Italians will be afraid to leave their homes for several days after the murder, but eventually the furor will die down and they will return to work.
