The conglomerate of Procter and Gamble has its origins on April 12, 1837, when British-born émigrés William Procter (English) and James Gamble (Irish) begin selling their first manufactured goods (soap and candles) in Cincinnati, Ohio, where they had settled initially and met when they married sisters Olivia and Elizabeth Norris.

Alexander Norris, their father-in-law, had called a meeting in which he persuaded his new sons-in-law to become business partners.

Procter & Gamble is created on October 31, 1837, as a result of this suggestion.
