The Fall of Toro and Sancho II’s Continued Conquests (1072 CE)
Following his victory over Alfonso VI at the Battle of Golpejera (1072 CE) and his expansion of power, Sancho II of Castile turns his attention to securing the rest of his father’s former domains.
One of his first targets is Toro, the city granted to his sister, Elvira, as part of Ferdinand I’s partition. With little resistance, Toro falls easily, bringing another key stronghold under Sancho’s control.
With Castile, León, and Toro under his rule, Sancho now sets his sights on Zamora, the last remaining city held by his sister Urraca—a conquest that will prove far more difficult.
