Some of the twenty rebels arrested are tried; two are convicted of treason (and later pardoned by the president).
Many Americans, particularly members of the opposition Jeffersonian Republican Party, are appalled by the overwhelming use of governmental force, which they fear might be a first step to absolute power.
To Federalists, however, the most important result is that the national authority has triumphed over its first rebellious adversary and has won the support of the state governments in enforcing federal law within the states.
